Far Out Garden Sounds is Third Eye Stimuli’s own home-grown recording and live video series, set in the coastal Illawarra escarpment, just an hour south of Sydney. Shining light on artists within the underground rock, psych/garage and indie scenes; we invite bands both on and off the label’s roster into our lush backyard to perform live, for the whole online world to enjoy — on our YouTube channel and Instagram. The series is a manifestation of our DIY mantra, while simultaneously celebrating nature and the great outdoors. Sets are captured with ambient microphones allowing birds, trees and the sonics of mother nature to creep into the production, adding a unique twist to the experience.
Beginning in 2020, Far Out Garden Sounds happened spontaneously with a loose idea to record Aotearoa’s lofi psych/garage rocker Joe Ghatt, when he was on his Australian debut tour. With that first episode being tracked with maybe 2-3 mics and just two iPhones, we weren’t concerned with capturing high definition. We knew the music to speak for itself — no matter how raw it might be. With the release of Joe Ghatt’s session, the feedback was surprisingly positive and the YouTube videos clocked a bunch of plays, so we were inspired to go on recording our favourite artists.
The garden has hosted the likes of Sunfruits, The Oogars, Misty Lanes, Tropical Strength, GIMMY, The B-Side Tangent and more over the past 3-4 years. We’ve learned a bunch of lessons along the way, being at the mercy of mother nature and the usual technical difficulties that come with recording a live show. Nonetheless, we’ve levelled up our audio and video production with every episode.
After releasing 7 episodes, we figured Far Out Garden Sounds deserves its own compilation — a digital artefact that fans can have forever. We’ve curated our “Best Of” from the series and arranged them so that you can experience the production from its humble beginning, all the way up until now. It’s a nice way for us to reflect on what we’ve created and celebrate all the amazing artists that have made some noise in the backyard. Thanks for tuning in, we’ve got plenty more Far Out Garden Sounds to come!
